If Steven Spielberg Directed Indiana Jones 5, He Would've Focused on This

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is the first movie in the series not directed by Steven Spielberg. However, had the filmmaker remained at the helm of the franchise, the plot of the final installment would have been significantly different from the one we know.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny recently debuted on cinema screens. The movie, despite the initial reluctance of critics, is getting better and better reviews and proves that in the hearts of fans Steven Spielberg's archaeologist played by Harrison Ford still has a special place. However, the fifth (and final) installment of Indy's adventures is the first film in the series that ws not directed by the creator.

The helm for the final installment was taken over by James Mangold, who had a huge influence on the story. The filmmaker engaged his screenwriters, who transformed the plot and Spielberg's idea. As it turns out, the original version of Indiana Jones 5 devoted much more attention to the relationship between the title character and his beloved Marion. Here's what Variety was told by the person playing the archaeologist's wife Karen Allen:

"When Steven was going to direct the film, the scripts focused more on the story of Indiana and Marion. But when Steven resigned and James joined, they started over with new screenwriters and went in the direction they went. They intended to tell a different story. That doesn't mean that I ever read the script that Steven was working on, because I didn't. But from the conversations we had, I knew that Steven's story involved Marion in a much bigger way than the one that was eventually written."

Recall that after the tragedy that was the death of their son during the Vietnam War, Marion and Indiana grew distant. How great an impact the loss of a child and wife had on the main character was shown in the latest installment.

How do you think the final part would have benefited if the filmmakers had focused more on the relationship between the archaeologist and his wife?

Why didn't Steven Spielberg direct Indiana Jones 5?

The decision to put the direction of the final part of the series in the hands of another filmmaker was made by Spielberg himself. The director last stepped behind the camera of the archaeologist's adventures in 2008, but Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull was not very well received. Spielberg ultimately concluded that a new director would have a fresh perspective that would better appeal to the current generation.
