In the new Disney+ series Echo, Maya Lopez is shown as a person with unique skillset and powers. Thanks to her connection with her ancestors, the heroine of the series has access to supernatural abilities, which complement her learned proficiencies - she has been training in martial arts and using weapons since childhood, making her a demanding opponent to be reckoned with.

Maya Lopez's abilities in the MCU

When Maya Lopez activates her powers, orange glowing spirals appear on the palms of her hands. When they are present, the heroine gains supernatural strength, which among other things helped her in the second episode to free herself from a speeding train. However, that's not all, because her powers can also help others.

Great strength comes from the bond with male ancestors, while the connection with female ancestors gives Maya the ability to heal wounds, thanks to which she can save the lives of others. Additionally, during the healing process, she can also tap into a person's memories. It was because of this that she was able to find out the truth about Kingpin, who ordered her father's murder.

Maya Lopez in Marvel comics

The heroine's abilities were presented completely differently in the comics. In them, Maya Lopez trained her observation skills to a very high level due to her hearing problems. Thanks to this, during the fight she was able to immediately memorize the opponent's moves, and then use this knowledge to defeat him.

Even before the series premiere, the series' executive producer, Sydney Freeland, commented on why this ability was abandoned to bring closer attention to her connection with tribal ancestors (see Variety).

Her ability from the comics to mimic every move or attack is downplayed in the series. I can only say that you won't see much of this in Echo. This is my cue.

It is also worth noting that in the comics and in the series, Maya Lopez is not a mutant and is still just an ordinary person who has access to abilities beyond the reach of ordinary people.
