Harrison Ford Played Indiana Jones Only Because Another Turned Down the Role; 'I'm Very Grateful to You'

Indiana Jones is a series of films that includes a trilogy from the 1980s, the fourth part from 2008 and the latest production, which will soon hit the theaters. The stories about the adventurous archaeologist remain iconic works and have had crowds of loyal fans for 40 years. The success of these movies has been ensured by thrilling action and the appreciated performance of Harrison Ford.

However, the man who became the face of the series was not the first choice of the creators. At the top of the list for the role of Indiana Jones was not Ford, but Tom Selleck, known for such productions as Blue Blood or Quigley Down Under. However, the actor turned down an engagement in Steven Spielberg's work because he was bound by the contract for the action show Magnum P.I. from the 1980s.

At the Italian premiere of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny Ford felt obliged to mention the situation. The actor took a moment and years later thanked Selleck for the role, which was passed to him due to his fellow actor's busy schedule (via Screen Rant).

Had it not been for the contract binding Selleck to the show, he might have made his debut as Indiana Jones in 1981. However, 40 years have passed and today many viewers cannot imagine the franchise without Ford's participation.

All the films in the series are available on Disney+, and the latest production Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny will hit theaters on June 30.
