The Walking Dead expanded from a standalone series into a vast universe filled with numerous spin-offs. One of them is World Beyond, where we can discover more about the origins of the zombie epidemic, which at its peak of popularity, was watched by at least several million viewers worldwide.

The Walking Dead - how did the zombie apocalypse start?

Warning! The text contains spoilers.

The biggest fans of The Walking Dead certainly remember 2010, when the series first aired. The first season only had six episodes, and the final one slightly addressed the beginning of the epidemic.

Then the main characters arrive at the Center of Disease Control, where Dr. Edwin Jenner is trying to find a cure. Sadly, he gave up hope of healing the world and eventually committed suicide by blowing up the entire building.

The topic of a cure for the virus returns only in the fourth season. During that season, we meet three new characters - Abraham, Rosita, and Eugene. Supposedly, the last one knew how to create an antidote. Later in the story, it was revealed that he had lied in order to be protected by his two companions.

The actual turning point that reveals more about the onset of the worldwide zombie apocalypse in The Walking Dead is the ending of World Beyond - quite literally, as it pertains to the post-credits scene of the final episode of the second season.

As can be seen in the video, there are only two characters in the scene. The language they are speaking confirms that the epidemic started in France.

However, moving on to the heart of the matter. The researcher returns to the laboratory after some time and plays a film featuring Dr. Jenner from the first season of the original series. At one point, a mysterious man joins her and they engage in a "nostalgic" conversation.

The stranger blames the researcher and her team, Violet, for starting the entire thing (even though he may have been involved, as indicated by the woman's statement: "When you all did what you did"). In the discussion, another team – Primorse – is mentioned, involved in the "project," which was at a conference in the United States during the start of the epidemic.

Another detail indicates that the scene is set at the beginning of the zombie apocalypse. One of the camera shots shows a sign on the wall "Les Morts Sont Nés Ici," which can be translated as "Here the dead were born."

Let's not forget that the entire series of The Walking Dead is based on a comic book by Robert Kirkman, who never clarified the origin of the plague. The creators also refrained from providing explanations throughout the entire eleven seasons of the main series.

The brand's popularity grew so much that many other productions set in the same world were created, so the topic of the epidemic's origin had to be "bitten" sooner or later.

Enormous universe of The Walking Dead

We recently sorted out all the productions set in the world of zombies for you. You can read more about them here.

However, it should be noted that the scene discussed earlier is directly connected to The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which has six episodes. The production focuses on the titular character, one of the series' most popular figures, who has made it to France. The last episode of this show premiered in October.

Another spin-off of the show is also on the way. I refer to The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, which focuses on the stories of Michonne and Rick Grimes, the main character of the original The Walking Dead.

The famous sheriff returns to the universe after a very long break. He was last seen by viewers in the ninth season when he faced a horde of zombies and was declared dead.
