The Witcher Season 3 Will Have Jaskier Like John Lennon? 'A Lot of People Think I'm a Rock Star'

Playing the role of Jaskier in The Witcher, actor Joey Batey has revealed which music stars inspired him to work on the next seasons.

Promotional campaign for the upcoming third season of The Witcher is in full swing. Both the creators and cast of the show are taking part in numerous interviews, during which they give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Netflix's hit production. This time we examine an interview given by Joey Batey, playing Jaskier, to the editors of Collider.

Avenue of stars

In the interview the artist revealed that before each new season of The Witcher he looked for inspiration in a different rock star.

"In the first season, [showrunner] Lauren [Schmidt-Hissrich] and I talked about trying to use the characteristics of certain musicians. And so in the first season Jakier was a little young [David] Bowie trying to figure out what he wanted to do. Very spectacular. In season two we decided to go for the late Freddie Mercury, showing these epic, angry songs," he explained.

Time for Lennon

In the third act of the story Jaskier will have a completely new role to play. That's why Batey, together with the showrunner, decided that the ideal inspiration would be an absolute music legend - John Lennon.

"Before we got to the third season, I sat down with Joseph Trapanes [the composer]. The pieces I was creating at the time were shared with Lauren, and we both discussed by email, trying to work out the direction we would go. There's something of John Lennon in this season. Maybe we've scaled back that earlier showman a bit to use music and art as a way to explore his feelings. And exploring themes that he may have previously set aside in order to be more spectacular. It seems to me that this is something that best suits this star," explained Batey.

The origin of styling

The actor also touched on the origin of Jaskier's rock styling. The British actor revealed that it was mainly due to costume designer Lucinda Wright. The artist, with modest input from Batey, came up with the character's distinctive closet, helping to define his personality.

"I think a lot of people think I'm a rock star, but that's mainly thanks to Lucinda, our costume designer, who created these coats. And I was fortunate to be able to share with her tips on creating them, such as the choice of leathers and cuts. So I think I should thank her for making me rock and roll," he added.

Although Jaskier is one of the most likable characters in The Witcher, the recently announced controversial plot has appalled the public. Recall that in the third season the character is to get into a romance with king Radovid, which greatly displeased the viewers, who hoped that the upcoming episodes of the series would finally be more faithful to Andrzej Sapkowski's prose.

Finally, let's add that the premiere of the first part of the third season of The Witcher will debut on Netflix as early as June 29.
