The first half of the third season of The Witcher hits Netflix tomorrow. The decision to split the latest season of the White Wolf's adventures was explained by Steve Gaub, executive producer of the show, in an interview for The Verge. Recall that earlier Gaub spoke to Yahoo, where he revealed that the upcoming installment would make a great finale for Henry Cavill in the role of the Witcher.

The Witcher as Stranger Things

Gaub said that splitting the third season was not the original plan. Such an idea came about when the fourth season of Stranger Things came out, which was released on the platform in two parts - this inspired the team of The Witcher To do the same.

According to the executive producer cliffhangers do not exist in the world of streaming. The filmmaker pointed out that in the upcoming season of The Witcher there is a certain turning point, which provides a good reason for a split. This will enable fans to speculate and conjecture about the continuation of the story for longer.

"It came out during the editing process [the idea for the season split - ed. note], it wasn't written in the script; [...] However, we knew what the season was and that there was a significant turning point in it. When we were in the middle of shooting, Stranger Things came out with a split season. We thought at the time: "Well, that's intriguing." In the world of streaming, cliffhangers don't really exist, because you turn on the next episode right after the previous one ends. You don't have that satisfaction of anticipation, of discussion. So we wanted to give that to the fans [...]," said Steve Gaub.

It is worth noting the uneven division of the season. It will contain eight episodes in total, but the first part consists of five and the second part of three.. The same was done for Stranger Things, where the two episodes that debuted later lasted longer. It will probably be the same with The Witcher, given that these are Cavill's final moments as the title character.

What will the third season of The Witcher bring?

So far, Netflix has released some promotional material for the third season, including the final trailer. We also learned a few details about Ciri, as revealed by the actress who plays her, Freya Allan. More about Cahir and his difficult choices was also said by Eamon Farren.

Many fans of the universe took Cavill's departure after the third season badly. Recall that he will be replaced by Liam Hemsworth. The aforementioned Steve Gaub confessed that he is already looking forward to working with the actor and his creation of the Witcher.

Finally, let's recall that the second part of the third season will hit Netflix on July 27, 2023.
