Eight years have passed since the release of Mad Max: Fury Road. George Miller's post-apocalyptic masterpiece is among the finest, if not the very best, blockbuster of the past decade. The production received ten Oscar nominations and converted six of them into statuettes. The success of Fury Road led to high expectations for its prequel. Here's everything we know about Furiosa.

When will Furiosa hit the theaters?

The fifth installment of the series will hit theaters on May 24, 2024. Furiosa will face tough competition, as on the same day Garfield starring Chris Pratt and Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes will be released. It's said that the world premiere of Furiosa is expected to take place at the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, following the pattern set by Fury Road (see Variety).

Who is the director of Furiosa?

George Miller, the creator of Mad Max, is responsible for the quality of Furiosa. The director of Happy Feet not only helmed the film, but also co-wrote the script with Nick Lathouris. Margaret Sixel was responsible for the editing, who also worked on Fury Road. Colin Gibson, the production designer, Ben Osmo, the production sound mixer, Lesley Vanderwalt, the makeup artist, and Jenny Beavan, the costume designer, were all part of the production team. The music for the film was composed by Junkie XL.

Who is in the cast of Furiosa?

In Fury Road, Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron created an unforgettable duo. We know that they won't return in Furiosa. Miller's latest film is branded with the name of the phenomenal Anya Taylor-Joy. The actress known from Last Night in Soho and The Queen's Gambit will play the title character.

Although Taylor-Joy appears to be an excellent casting choice, in an interview with The New York Times, Miller admitted that she was not his first pick. Initially, the director intended to use digital technology to make Charlize Theron look younger, but he was discouraged from this idea due to technological limitations.

The younger version of Furiosa will be played by child actress Alyla Browne, with whom Miller collaborated on Three Thousand Years of Longing.

The villains will be played by Tom Burke and Chris Hemsworth. It's not clear who Burke will portray. The actor known for his role as Orson Welles in Mank is rumored to be linked to Immortan Joe. We know much more about Hemsworth's character, though. The MCU actor will portray Dementus, a ruthless and deranged leader of a motorcycle gang, who was born into a brutal world governed by the rule of "kill or be killed."

What is Furiosa about?

The distributor's description suggests that the story of Furiosa will be closely related to the events of Fury Road (vide Hollywood Reporter).
