Who does Chris Hemsworth play in Furiosa? Dementus from prequel to Mad Max: Fury Road explained

Furiosa will follow the story of titular character before she teamed up with Max in Fury Road. At the beginning of December, the first trailer of the film was finally released, showcasing the antagonist of Furiosa, Dementus, portrayed by Chris Hemsworth. We still don't know much about his character, but the trailer gives away some details.

Who is Dementus?

The beginning of the trailer seems to show a young Furiosa, who has just been kidnapped from The Green Place. Dementus might be considering making her a main source of entertainment for his gang, as indicated by the character's later words to Furiosa:

During that time, Dementus was clearly a formidable local chieftain who enjoyed extravagance and displaying his power. This is suggested by one of the scenes in the trailer, where he rides a chariot pulled by motorcycles. The man leads the Biker Horde and seems to be in conflict with Immortan Joe, who appeared twice in the trailer.

The conflict between the two chieftains could be one of the main themes of Furiosa. Maybe the protagonist will team up with Joe to defeat her foe. Which would explain how Furiosa became one of Joe's subordinates in Mad Max: Fury Road. However, Dementus has never appeared in films or comics before, nor has he been mentioned in them. This clearly means that he ultimately experienced a complete defeat, and over the years, people living in the wastelands have forgotten about his reign of terror.

Chris Hemsworth about Dementus

During this year's CCXP in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Chris Hemsworth talked about his character on a special panel. The actor revealed that Dementus is ruthless and insane, yet he is merely a result of the environment in which he was born. It's a place where it's either kill or be killed, there's no other option. That's the reason he rules with a firm hand and possesses the charisma to manipulate people.

People are drawn to his powerful Biker Horde because Dementus provides solutions to their problems. All they have to do is follow him, and he will lead them to a better life. Perhaps Furiosa has been deceived by Dementus for a while, but we will only learn the specifics after the movie premiere or in another of the trailers that will surely be released.

It's worth noting that Dementus was only mentioned once in the 2015 game Mad Max. We don't encounter this character in the game, but we learn that he was defeated by the game's main antagonist, Scabrous Scrotus. This could mean that Dementus won't meet his end in the movie, although it's not certain, because the virtual title isn't canonical.

Dementus seems to be a straightforward antagonist introduced to give purpose to Furiosa and somehow connect her to Immortan Joe. Chris Hemsworth also assures that his character has significant depth, which could add to a motion picture that isn't only impressive during intense chases and conflicts, but also in portraying the relationships and dynamics between the characters.
