What if Nolan Directed The Avengers? Robert Downey Jr Answers

Oppenheimer star Robert Downey Jr. and the show's director consider what the world would be like if Christopher Nolan had been at the helm of 2012's Avengers.

During a Q&A panel organized by WIRED, Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Nolan wondered what The Avengers would look like, if it had been directed by Oppenheimer's director, rather than Joss Whedon.

At the same time, the filmmaker praised the collaboration with the actor on his latest film, calling Downey Jr. an icon of superhero movies.

"Judging by our collaboration on Oppenheimer, in Avengers there would probably be too much Tony Stark. You would dominate the film a bit. Would you be willing to jump on one of those jet packs that really exist?," Christopher Nolan asked jokingly.

Robert Downey Jr. responded in kind, bringing a joking retort, which hid praise for Nolan's directorial craftsmanship.

"If Christopher Nolan had directed The Avengers, we would still be making the movie."

It is worth adding that Christopher Nolan is not in a hurry to make his works. Despite being a world-renowned director, he releases his films every two or three years. Before Oppenheimer, there was Tenet (2020), and before that Dunkirk (2017) and Interstellar (2014). In a way, this demonstrates Christopher Nolan's work culture. Among other things, his movies are very successful because they are so polished.

In a Q&A on the WIRED channel, Robert Downey Jr. and Christopher Nolan also analyzed the star's eleven-year adventure in the MCU.. Nolan praised Jon Favreau's decision about casting the actor in Iron Man back in 2008.

"It was one of the greatest acting choices in the history of cinema," he admitted.

He also added that it was the actor's "incredible potential" and "star charisma" that made Tony Stark one of the most important characters of the first decade of the MCU. Moreover, the director admitted that he cast Robert Downey Jr. in Oppenheimer, in order to show younger viewers the full range of his acting skills.

"He's one of our great actors, and while a generation of kids know what a great movie star he is, they haven't seen his subtlety and genius. I wanted him to do something completely different, to lose himself in another person," explained Nolan.

In the movie, Robert Downey Jr. plays the role of Lewis Strauss, an American businessman who was a key figure in the development of nuclear weapons and US nuclear energy policy. Oppenheimer can currently be viewed in theaters.
