The text contains spoilers from The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Recently, an adaptation of Suzanne Collins' novel hit theaters, introducing us to Panem before the events of the well-known Hunger Games. The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, starring Rachel Zegler in one of the leading roles, is available in cinemas from November 17th. The actress plays Lucy Gray, a girl from District 12 who reaches the Capitol for the Games, and her mentor becomes Coriolanus Snow (played by Tom Blythe). Related:Lucy Gray from The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes was in the Hunger Games about Katniss? This suggests a fan theory The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes concludes ambiguously, as the lack of trust between the main characters leads to Coriolanus shooting at the fleeing girl, without providing a direct answer to whether the bullets hit Lucy. In a recent interview, Rachel Zegler expressed her hope that the author of the book would provide fans with a more detailed explanation in the future. She also shared her vision in which her heroine achieves freedom. Lucy Gray’s main goal throughout the film is survival. She’s surviving her fellow tributes, surviving Snow, and surviving herself. There’s a point when I think she realizes she’s taken a wrong turn, and we see her flinch a bit at Coriolanus touching her chin… those are the moments of sobriety. Those are the moments when she wakes up from her own performance and realizes it’s do or die. I always think about what happens to my characters while the credits roll for audiences. When it comes to Lucy Gray, I like to think she’s free. I hope one day I’ll get to hear that from Suzanne [Collins], though. However, these are just the actress's assumptions, and we still don't have an official explanation. Many theories have been proposed about Lucy's fate, with the most popular one suggesting a grim scenario in which the girl dies, and the absence of a body indicates that Snow has carefully covered up his tracks. And, he only heard birds repeating the melody. It's also possible that the wounded Lucy managed to hide from Coriolanus and bled to death. An optimistic theory assumes that Gray, thanks to her cleverness and skills acquired during the Games, survived and was able to return to the 12th District, where she started a family and was Katniss' ancestor. Another theory holds that she ended up in District 13, which existed in secret and was an ideal shelter for a fugitive. She could also establish a family there, from which President Coin, who would later act with a personal vendetta against President Snow, originated. The film's producer, Nina Jacobson, also speaks out on this topic. She believes in Lucy's cleverness and survival instinct. I 100% believe that she's a survivor. She's clever. She knows the woods. I think she knows how to take care of herself. And I would love to find out. I hope I'll get to find out someday. Maybe in a future sequel to the book or another movie, we will find out what happened to Lucy Gray. Or perhaps the writer intended to craft Lucy's character in a way that would keep her fate a mystery for the readers and President Snow, leaving everyone forever haunted by the question of what really happened.
