Lucy Gray Braid's fate remains unknown at the end of The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. We cannot be certain about the fate of the tribute from District 12 and former friend of Coriolanus Snow in both the book and its film adaptation. However, fans have their own theory, which suggests that Lucy Gray was actively backing Katniss Everdeen in her endeavors to overthrow the existing regime in the original trilogy.

Lucy Gray Baird is Greasy Sae

According to some fans, Lucy Gray Baird could be Greasy Sae. Coriolanus Snow shoots towards the direction of his companion's voice in the finale of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but he is unable to find the body. Perhaps the girl ran away and managed to survive. The book and the film leave her fate open to various fan theories (vide Reddit). One of the theories suggests that Lucy Gray Baird is Greasy Sae, and there are several arguments in support of this.

Living in the wild, Lucy could learn to prepare food from anything. This would account for her cooking abilities as Greasy Sae. Finally, when working in District 12, Greasy Sae was known for her ability to create something edible out of almost nothing, making her Katniss's top customer. In Mockingjay, a woman appears at the meetings of Alma Coin's small council, which surprises the main character. In theory, the seemingly unimportant Greasy Sae could be someone more than anyone realizes, and have knowledge about Snow.

If Greasy Sae were indeed Lucy Gray, it would clarify why the woman in The Hunger Games is so deeply involved with Katniss. She would have many reasons to do so, being a former victor of the Games and an enemy of Coriolanus Snow. Lucy, just like Katniss, had to confront the intrigues of the president of Panem and would definitely want to witness her former mentor being deprived of power. Greasy Sae belonged to the group of survivors who returned to the Victors' Village in the 12th district. This might serve as a symbol indicating that Lucy Gray Braid is finally claiming her deserved position after winning the 10th Games.

Problem with the theory about Lucy Gray Braid's future

Reaching the age of 80 in District 12 appears to be practically impossible. Lucy, as Greasy Sae, would need to go back to her hometown quite late, because otherwise the dust and toxic air from the mining industry in that area would have killed her a long time ago. Additionally, Lucy didn't show any particular attachment to the District, making her return seem illogical.

Especially since the girl was determined to be free at any cost, and she gained the opportunity to do so in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. We are unaware of her fate because she didn't reappear in the later lives of any characters. If she survived, she might have chosen to make use of it after being given the opportunity to start a new life. Returning to the poor District, where survival is very difficult, makes no sense in her case. Particularly if her motivation was to wait for several decades for the opportunity to seek revenge on Coriolanus.

The case of Lucy Gray Baird illustrates that leaving the fates of characters open-ended is often a wise choice. Devoted fans of the books and films can create brand new ideas and theories. Suzanne Collins may discuss fan theories and clarify whether there is a link between Lucy Gray Baird and Greasy Sae.
