The Witcher Didn't End With Cavill's Departure, Though it Could Have; Showrunner Explains

Lauren S. Hissrich revealed that after Henry Cavill's departure, one option was to end the show altogether. The producer explained why such a solution would not be good.

A few weeks ago we got the trailer for the third season of Netflix's The Witcher, which will debut on the platform as early as June 29. It will be the last season starring Henry Cavill. Showrunner Lauren S. Hissrich assures that the next batch of episodes will be significantly closer to the book canon. A total of two more seasons are to be made in the future, although nothing is certain yet. The character of the witcher Geralt will be played by Liam Hemsworth, and the shooting for the fourth season is planned for September 2023.

Redanian Intelligence reports that in an interview with Total Film magazine, Hissrich clarified questions about Henry Cavill's departure and what the alternative approaches to the show after the loss of the actor playing first fiddle, could look like.

"It was time for him [Henry Cavill - ed. note] to move on in his life. I think we all mourned it in our own way. We had the choice to make Geralt go away and end the whole show, but this was not something we wanted to do. There were just too many stories left to tell," admitted Hissrich.

The showrunner added that another option was to replace the character of Geralt with another Witcher, which would have meant further deviating from the books by Andrzej Sapkowski.

"I don't think anyone would want that."

As we know, Liam Hemsworth will play the role of Geralt of Rivia in the fourth and fifth seasons of the series, if those ever get made.

"He has a lot of energy and a lot of emotion. Of course, this is a new chapter for us. There's a lot to do, but we love what we're doing, and we're going to keep going," Lauren S. Hissrich concluded.

CBR speculates that Henry Cavill has left the show due to the numerous deviations from the source material. It is known that he is a big fan of the novels by Andrzej Sapkowski and games from CD Projekt RED. It was his enthusiasm and commitment that determined that he got the role. The reason for the resignation remains in the realm of conjecture, as neither side has clarified what the issue was. Unconfirmed reports suggest that Cavill actually did not get along with the producers, which resulted in the termination of the contract and - perhaps - the signing of a clause forbidding disclosure of how the collaboration went.
