Tears of the Kingdom Devs Would Like to Make a Zelda Movie; There's Just One Problem

The recent success of Super Mario Bros. has apparently motivated the devs of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to consider their own screen adaptation. Director Hidemaro Fujibayashi and producer Eiji Aonuma revealed in an interview for Polygon, that they are interested in such a project. Unlike Mario, Zelda has a certain obstacle that may not be the easiest to overcome.

The problem in question goes back to the beginning of the entire series. The issue is that Link is a silent protagonist. In the game, this is not a problem at all, as it does not take away from the immersion. Besides, we occasionally hear the main character's various grunts and sighs. However, if the developers were to translate this into a movie, creating any emotion for a character who doesn't speak at all would be a difficult task.

What's more, Aonuma said that his good intentions might not be enough to make an adaptation of the game series. Fujibayashi added that a fan response would be most important in this matter.

The solution to Link's "silent" problem is not entirely obvious. So far, the character has been mainly famous for his achievements and has not needed to be characterized with any words. The filmmakers could, of course, give him some lines during his adventures in Hyrule, but the last such attempt did not end well.

Recall that in The Legend of Zelda: The Hero of Time Link was given a voice, but the end result was quite poor. In this case, however, we were dealing with real actors, not a feature-length animated film.

It will be interesting to see how this case will develop. For the moment we are only talking about an idea, and the creators have no specified plans for its implementation.
