Writer Blames Sylvester Stallone for Spoiling Commando Finale; 'That Wasn't in the Script'

Commando screenwriter Steven E. de Souza has revealed that the original ending of the iconic action movie was quite different. Its change was necessitated by... the rivalry between Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone.

The 1980s in cinema was mainly marked by the rivalry between two great actors - Arnold Schwarzenegger and Sylvester Stallone. And although privately the men were pals, on the set the camaraderie gave way to a fight for the title of the biggest star of action cinema.

This was particularly evident in 1985, when Rambo II and Commando were about to hit the big screens. The former's position was already well established thanks to the success of the original. In contrast, the movie with Schwarzenegger was yet to throw down the gauntlet to the competing series. However, to emerge victorious from this duel, the story of John Matrix had to be better in every aspect.

Behind-the-scenes of Commando was explored by an editorial published by RadioTimes, as told by the movie's screenwriter, Steven E. de Souza. Speaking to the reporters, he revealed that the film's director, Mark L. Lester, saw how many terrorists were sent to the sand by Stallone in Rambo II, and longed for Schwarzenegger to top that score. So it was decided to make adjustments to the script, which unfortunately proved to be very costly.

"At the time, it was a struggle Rambo vs. Commando. Arnold anticipated that people would talk about his film because he was self-conscious and didn't take himself seriously, unlike Rambo. I blame Sylvester Stallone for spoiling the ending of Commando. Director Mark L. Lester saw a fragment from Rambo II and said that Stallone kills about a million guys in there, so we need to kill more .. So Mark went over budget by putting a huge scene where an entire army is defeated. Shooting a hundred guys - that was not in the script. The budget wasn't there and they said we couldn't afford to shoot what I wrote," confessed de Souza.

Looking for savings, it was decided to change the ending of Commando to one that was cheaper to make. As a result, Matrix's duel with Bennett, instead of taking place on a private island, was moved to a room located in the basement of Fox. Although the new finale of the show also appealed to the fans, the original idea would probably have impressed the viewers even more. Unfortunately, we won't find out anymore, and the blame for this (non-literally, of course) lies with Sylvester Stallone and his deadly gun from Rambo II.
