Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind, among other things, the making of the Dune movie, has acquired the screen rights to Street Fighter, the popular fighting game series from Capcom.

In 1987, Capcom released the first installment of Street Fighter. The 2D fighting game proved to be extremely popular, resulting in a whole series of games for various platforms. June will see the release of the sixth major installment, but as it turns out, this is not the only upcoming project drawing from the iconic IP.

Ambitious plans

As reported by Deadline, Legendary Entertainment has entered a partnership with Capcom, under which films and TV series set in the universe of Street Fighter are to be made. The first confirmed project is a movie. Unfortunately, at the time of writing this news, more details are not known.

Curse of the screen adaptation

Let's add that this won't be Capcom's first screen adaptation of the fighting game series. Riding the wave of the genre's popularity in the 1990s, Street Fighter lived to see a full-length picture with the same title. Unfortunately, the movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme met with a very cold reception from fans. In 2009, there was another attempt to resurrect the iconic brand on the big screens, but with similar results as in 1994.

Let's hope, however, that the curse of the screen adaptations of Street Fighter will be a thing of the past with Legendary Entertainment's new projects. The label has a number of well-received films to its credit, beginning with Denis Villeneuve's Dune, so there is a chance that Capcom's series will finally live to see a quality production.

Not just Street Fighter

Finally, it's worth mentioning that there is currently a big demand in Hollywood for video game adaptations. Last year, we got Uncharted with Tom Holland as Nathan Drake. Meanwhile, still in the queue are Ghost of Tsushima or Days Gone. Let us emphasize that we are still talking only about feature-length films. The list of upcoming TV adaptations is equally rich. Among them are Horizon, God of War and the second season of The Last of Us.
