The finale of Loki in a way sealed the fate of the main character of the series. However, it was the god of mischief himself who consciously chose this path and took the place of the One Who Lasts. Shortly after the premiere of the finale, show's producer Eric Martin revealed that such a solution was in line with the creators' intentions. They wanted to make Loki somehow advance in the rank of deities, while at the same time consciously taking on a lot of responsibility (vide Esquire):

"Our grand plan was to elevate Loki's rank from some inferior god to Deity with a capital D. To give him the power to finally get the throne he desired, but at the same time different from the one he desired. Now he has a duty. What he has done makes it possible for everyone else to live their lives. He gave up his dreams so that everyone can have free will. We wanted to strengthen his skills and thus give him wisdom and knowledge."

In the final episode of the second season of Loki we could see how the main character tries literally everything to save the established order without sacrificing anyone. Ultimately, he comes to the conclusion that it is he who must sit on the throne of the One Who Lasts and guard all possible timelines.. He is now responsible for their full supervision.

Eric Martin compared the hero's task to that of Atlas in Greek mythology. The Titan was condemned to hold the heavens for eternity. It was on his shoulders that the entire known Greek world lay, but between Atlas and Loki, however, there is a significant difference. The main character of the series himself took such a fate, while Atlas was assigned the task as a sentence for participating in the battle against the gods.

It is worth recalling that Atlas, among other things, tried to deceive Hercules so that he would be the one to take over the role of the titan, which ultimately failed. Perhaps, and in connection with Loki, we will still see some machinations aimed at handing over supervision of space-time to someone else. After all, there are as many Lokis as there are timelines.
