The movie's problems are the aftermath of the still ongoing conflict between the studios and the actors. science fictionZbigniew Woznicki10 October 2023 Source: Mortal Kombat; dir. Simon McQuoid; Warner Bros. Pictures; 2021i Work on Mortal Kombat 2 is still on hold and will resume in 2024 at the earliest. Originally, shooting for the movie was supposed to begin as early as June 2023, and indeed it did. Shortly thereafter, an actors' strike broke out, which led to the halting of work. However, some fans assumed that since shooting would take place in Australia and the cast was international, Mortal Kombat 2 would avoid the problem of protests. This, however, did not happen (vide The Direct). Claire Pullen outlined the problem in terms of the approach the studios are taking toward screenwriters and actors. The giants would rather lose more money through stalled productions than end the conflict by agreeing to the strikers' proposals. "Joining SAG-AFTRA in the WGA strike actually exacerbates the problems for movie workers around the world. Both strikes reveal a broader problem regarding the treatment of filmmakers in the industry, and the studios have lost more in stalled production than it would have cost them to pay the full amount of the writers' claims; it's time to properly compensate filmmakers, agree to fair terms and conditions, and get back to work." Still no agreement has been reached, which means that work on Mortal Kombat 2 will most likely not resume in 2023. If shooting begins early next year, the likely release date will be set for 2025. So far, only the screenwriters have reached a compromise with the studios, and the actors are still on strike. Meanwhile, as reported by The Wrap, work is expected to resume in 2024 on, among others, Superman: Legacy and Minecraft. The same applies to Mortal Kombat 2, but in the current situation it is hard to judge whether these postponements will remain unchanged.
