Mahershala Ali Almost Pulled Out of New Blade Movie; Chaos and Sidelined Character

Reboot of Blade is arguably one of Marvel Studios' most problematic projects. The production, which re-imagines the story of a half-blood vampire hunter, has undergone numerous changes. Some of them brought the movie's script to a caricatured form. Kevin Feige had to intervene when the lead actor Mahershala Ali, threatened to leave (vide Variety).

Blade was reportedly already being worked on by five different screenwriters and two directors, and the project was put on hold six weeks before shooting was to begin. One insider was said to have revealed that at one point the script of Blade was bringing a female character to the forefront, and the story was filled with moralizing tales about life. In contrast, the title character was relegated to fourth-lead role.

The situation seemed so dramatic that Mahershala Ali was ready to leave the project. This would have meant a huge blow to the film, since the Oscar-winning actor raises the prestige of the comic book's movie adaptation. This is probably why Kevin Feige rejected all scripts of Blade and hired Michael Green, an experienced man who won an Oscar for the script for Logan.

However, the movie continues to fall victim to the problems troubling Marvel Studios. The premiere of the production starring Mahershala Ali was to be postponed to 2025, and the budget will be less than $100 million. Admittedly, this is still a large amount, but let's recall that also in the past Marvel was ready to put up much larger sums of money for movie projects.
