Why didn't Quentin Tarantino's project come to fruition? movie & TV series triviaDominika Mazur30 May 2023 Quentin Tarantino, who is behind such iconic productions as Pulp Fiction, Django Unchained, Inglourious Basterds and the latest Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, told what got in the way of his vision for a James Bond movie. In an interview with Deadline he explained that it was unfortunate that he encountered obstacles from the film's producers, the Broccoli family, the legal owners of the franchise about Agent 007. The director mentioned that he contacted the heirs of Ian Fleming, creator of James Bond, in the 1990s. He wanted to discuss plans to create a film starring Agent 007. The movie was to be separate project and unrelated to the main series. There was a belief at the time that the rights to the first novel of Casino Royale were not held by the Broccoli family, responsible for the production of the movie series. The director expressed his desire to create his own adaptation of the film after the release of Pulp Fiction in 1994. "It turned out that Broccoli had realized three years earlier that someone would try to do what I tried. So they made a general agreement about Fleming's works and said: "We have the rights to everything he ever wrote. We'll just give them a ton of money. That goes for every single thing he ever wrote. If someone wants to make a movie out of it, they have to come to us.". Broccolis turned out to be smarter and closed the way to any outside adaptations. The rights to make films about Agent 007 thus belong solely to them. The director's project promised to be really interesting. After all, Tarantino stated that his Casino Royale would be set in the 1960s with a new actor in the lead role. The film would neither be part of an existing franchise nor create a new one. However, the filmmaker admitted that he has not made any moves to meet with producers.
