Here are all the dragons and their riders from House of the Dragon

The first dragon riders are believed to be the lords of Valyria from Essos, but it was Aegon the Conqueror who used their full power to unite Westeros. These creatures served the successive rulers of the Targaryen dynasty for hundreds of years before they became completely extinct. However, the species was revived 145 years later when three dragon eggs came into the possession of Daenerys Targaryen.

The first season of House of the Dragon ended with the tragic death of Rhaenyra's son, Lucerys Velaryon, and his dragon Arrax when Aemond lost control of Vhagar. Thus begins the Dance of the Dragons.

In the final episode, we learn that the "blacks" can send thirteen dragons against the "greens," who only have three. However, many of the creatures in Rhaenyra's camp are too young or untamed to fight, and some don't even have riders.

Below, we present all the dragons that have either already appeared in House of the Dragon or that we will meet in the subsequent seasons. Here is a list of eleven dragons associated with members of the Targaryen house.

Vhagar

House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, HBO, 2022

Named after one of the Valyrian gods, Vhagar is the largest dragon in the Dance of the Dragons. During a conversation with Viserys, young Laena remarks that Vhagar is too big for the Dragonpit, to which the king replies, "Some would say too large for our world."

Her first rider was Visenya Targaryen, who ruled during the conquest of her brother, and also husband, Aegon the Conqueror. After the queen's death, Vhagar passed into the possession of Prince Baelon Targaryen. The next rider was the late Laena Velaryon, and the dragon currently belongs to Aemond Targaryen.

Vhagar took part in many battles and fought, among others, during the military campaign of Aegon I Targaryen.

Caraxes

House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, HBO, 2022

Caraxes is also known as the Bloody Wyrm due to his color and cunning in battle. The dragon's muffled roar is another one of its characteristics. Paula Fairfield, responsible for sound effects, revealed that Caraxes' roar is caused by his deviated nasal septum.

Like Vhagar, the dragon also took part in previous battles during the era of Aemon Targaryen, the son of Jaehaerys. Caraxes also joined his second rider, Daemon Targaryen, in the fight for the Stepstones.

Meleys

House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, HBO, 2022

Despite her considerable size, Meleys is one of the fastest dragons in Westeros. At first, Alyssa Targaryen, the mother of the late King Viserys, wanted to ride the dragon. We saw Meleys in both the ninth and tenth episodes of House of the Dragon, when Rhaenys Targaryen, her current rider, rushed to deliver the news to Rhaenyra about her father's death. In the "black" camp, Meleys patrols the Velaryon fleet's blockades.

Syrax

House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, HBO, 2022

Rhaenyra Targaryen's dragon is named after an ancient Valyrian goddess. Despite Syrax's lack of battle experience, she is characterized as a "massive and formidable beast." Syrax is the first dragon we see at the very beginning of the first season, as she flies over the city with Princess Rhaenyra on her back.

Dreamfyre

Game of Thrones, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, HBO, 2011

In the second episode, we find out that Daemon steals an egg from a dragon named Dreamfyre, claiming that he wants to gift it to an unborn child. The dragoness lives in the Dragonpit, together with Syrax and Caraxes. Based on Song of Ice and Fire and the Game of Thrones series, it can be assumed that Dreamfyre is the mother of Daenerys' three dragons.

Dreamfyre is characterized by a silver color and pale blue wings. Her previous rider was Rhaena Targaryen, but the dragon is currently the mount of Princess Healena Targaryen, daughter of King Viserys and Alicent Hightower.

Sunfyre

In A Song of Ice and Fire, this dragon was ridden by Aegon II, the eldest son of Viserys and Alicent. Sunfyre is considered one of the most beautiful beasts in the Seven Kingdoms, thanks to its golden scales and pink wings.

Tessarion

Tessarion is three times smaller than the largest living dragon - Vhagar. Her wings and flames have a dark cobalt color, while the claws, crest, and scales on the dragoness's belly gleam in a light, coppery shade.

Despite being young, she possesses remarkable agility. The size of the dragon is suitable for combat, and since Tessarion belongs to the youngest son of Alicent and Viserys, Daeron Targaryen, we will probably be able to see her in the Dance of the Dragons.

Seasmoke

House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, HBO, 2022

The pale gray beast is the pride of Laenor Velaryon, who, although not a Targaryen, inherited dragon blood from his mother Rhaenys Targaryen. After the disappearance of his rider, we learn that Seasmoke is alone in Driftmark.

This is another young dragon, characterized by strength and endurance. The dragon appears in the third episode of House of the Dragon, when he shows up to support Daemon in the fight for the Stepstones, with Laenor on his back.

Vermax

House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, HBO, 2022

The dragon makes its first appearance in the sixth episode as Jacaerys Velaryon tries to teach it the command "Dracarys." Vermax's bonding with Rhaenyra's eldest son, as well as her other sons with Tyraxes and Arrax, was an important moment, given how often their lineage was questioned. Vermax also appears at the end of the season, when Jace flies out with the dragon to Eyrie and Winterfell to gain the support of Arryns and Starks.

Arrax

House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, HBO, 2022

He was owned by Lucerys Velaryon, but he died along with the prince after being attacked by Aemond's dragon while returning from Lord Borros Baratheon's castle. Despite being the right size for flying, Arrax stood no chance in a battle against Vhagar, as the dragoness exceeded him in both size and battle experience.

Tyraxes

Joffrey Velaryon's dragon, the third son of Rhaenyra, hasn't made an official appearance in any episodes of House of the Dragon. However, his name is mentioned by Daemon in the final episode. Tyraxes is too young and too small to be suitable for battle when the Dance of the Dragons begins. He is the smallest of the three dragon siblings based on his size.

Moondancer

Moondancer is a graceful, pale green dragon of Baela Targaryen, the daughter of Laena Velaryon and Daemon Targaryen. Given that she was the size of a stallion, she was only able to carry the princess when she turned fourteen. Even though Moondancer was known as the smallest of the dragons, she was agile both in the sky and on the ground. She was characterized by shimmering wings, a crest, and horns in the color of pearl.

Vermithor

House of the Dragon, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, HBO, 2022

Vermithor is definitely one of the most hyped dragons of the second season. The nearly century-old beast was once obedient to King Jaehaerys I, the predecessor of Viserys. Not without reason, Daemon tries to tame the dragon, whose power would help tip the scales of victory in favor of Rhaenyra and her allies.

Vermithor is also called the Bronze Fury. In size, he was only inferior to Vhagar and Balerion, known as the Black Dread, who in his prime could melt stone and steel, and while flying, cover an entire city with his own shadow. It's worth to mention that Cannibal is bigger than Vermithor.

Silverwing

That dragon once belonged to Queen Alysanne Targaryen, the sister and wife of King Jaehaerys. In the next season, Ulf White will become the rider of Silverwing, and he will side with the "blacks." Vermithor's companion was seen as a "milder version" of him. She owes her name to the silver scales covering her body.

Cannibal

The dragon with coal-black scales and ominous green eyes is another of the untamed dragons. His name isn't accidental - he was famous for consuming dead or newborn dragons and dragon eggs. He is remembered in history as one of the largest of his kind, and he was the oldest of the three wild dragons. It is believed that he hatched while King Jaehaerys I Targaryen was still a child.

Sheepstealer

Sheepstealer had a bad reputation among the people of Driftmark because he liked to eat sheep and shepherd dogs. He lived in freedom all his life until the Dance of Dragons, when he ultimately sided with the "blacks." Sheepstealer was ridden by a woman named Nettles, who never ceased her daily attempts to tame the dragon with lamb.

Grey Ghost

The dragon was described as having the color similar to the morning mist. Since Grey Ghost had been avoiding humans for years, he was only visible when flying over the sea and hunting for fish before heading to his den in Dragonmount. Throughout his life, he remained elusive, causing the dragon to never be bound to any of the riders and to remain free.
