Guillermo del Toro Did Not Direct Pacific Rim 2 for a Trivial Reason

This year marks 10 years since the release of Pacific Rim, so it's the perfect opportunity to learn new details from behind the scenes of the production. It is about these issues that Collider talked with director Guillermo del Toro, who revealed why he did not take the helm of the sequel.

Collaborations are broken for all sorts of reasons, but del Toro's reason for leaving the team seems really trivial. As said by the director in an interview conducted by Steven Weintraub, he chose not to direct the work on Pacific Rim: Uprising due to failure to book shooting locations in time.

And that's how the famous director resigned to participate in the second part of Pacific Rim. This departure probably significantly affected the quality of the sequel - Uprising was a much less well-received.

For comparison, let's quote the current viewer rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Pacific Rim can boast a recommendation of 77% users (more than 100,000 reviews), while Pacific Rim: Uprising was liked by only 37% of the audience (more than 25 thousand reviews).

Recall further that del Toro's movie hit theaters in 2013. In turn, the sequel debuted in 2018 and was the responsibility of Steven S. DeKnight, who directed, among others, one episode of Daredevil.
