Why Did Batman and Robin Fail? Producer has a Surprising Theory

Batman and Robin from 1997, directed by the late Joel Schumacher is today considered one of the worst films about the adventures of the Dark Knight. The production, which grossed more than $120 million, was criticized by both fans and reviewers around the world. The picture was not even helped by such stars as George Clooney and Chris O'Donnell in the title roles. Movie's producer, Michael Uslan, has a theory as to why the film failed so dismally.

In an interview with the Traversing the Stars channel, Uslan talked about the making of Batman and Robin. He admitted that the film studio pressured Schumacher to make his films less dark than Tim Burton's movies and more child-friendly. This was mainly to increase sales of toys that were to be made under the film's license.

The producer reminded all those criticizing the film that Schumacher did what was asked of him. He admitted that instead of creating a "two-hour toy commercial," it would have been better to allow the director creative freedom. If the film was successful, the toys would still sell.

However, Uslan sees some positives in the making of both Schumacher films. The failure of these productions eventually led to the Dark Knight trilogy directed by Christopher Nolan. He also believes that Schumacher got too much criticism for things that were created by the interference of the film studio.
