Top Gun: Maverick Wouldn't Make Sense if This Hasn't Been Cut

Top Gun: Maverick turned out to be a giant hit of 2022. The movie was distinguished by an interesting story, multidimensional characters and amazing special effects. At the same time, the movie showed how the future of the main character Pete Mitchell was shaped by the death of his friend Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (vide Screen Rant).

Maverick did not stop blaming himself for the fate of his comrade, sabotaging his future career and the future of Bradley Bradshaw, who wanted to follow in the footsteps of his tragically deceased father. Mitchell's bitterness, his stalled career in the Navy, and his motivations for acting like he did in Top Gun: Maverick would not have made sense, however, if one of the final scenes of the original movie had not been cut.

Originally, the main character, along with Charlotte "Charlie" Blackwood, was supposed to visit Goose's grave. This would have given Mitchell a chance to close a certain stage and come to terms with the death of his close friend.. In this way, Maverick would have shown that he had the courage to work through a very difficult experience and then move forward. However, the scene eventually disappeared, making the fate of the main character seem much more bitter.

Maverick could not find the strength to stand before Nick Bradshaw's grave and thus fully accept his death. For the following years he was unable to get out of the loop of blaming himself, which, more than 30 years later, made for an interesting sequel. This makes the character of Maverick himself much more interesting. Perhaps the desire to tell the protagonist's grief was the motivation for telling a new story.
