The Last of Us Showrunner Announces Highest Stakes in Season 2; 'Anyone Can Die'

The second season of The Last of Us will keep viewers guessing until the very end. The showrunner revealed that in the upcoming season none of the characters can be certain of their fate. It will be a new experience for fans of the game as well.

First season of The Last of Us was, for the most part, faithful to the events depicted in the original game. The situation may be different for the next season, as told by showrunner Craig Mazin. The second season of The Last of Us will be more unpredictable and, according to the showrunner, no character can rely on "plot armor" (vide The Hollywood Reporter):

"In the first season we repeated something that could be annoying - everyone died, except Joel and Ellie. Watching the show, people understood that this was a story where no one was safe. If you plan to make a show that lasts for many seasons, you give plot armor to the main characters until a particular actor asks for too much money or their popularity drops sharply and then you kill off his character.

We don't do that, and neither does HBO. Therefore, as far as I know, anyone can die at any time."

The producer's statement may cause confusion among fans of the games. At the same time, for Neil Druckmann it is a chance to tell the whole story in a new way. We do not know to what extent the story of The Last of Us 2 can be changed, but the lack of any plot armor for all the characters makes nothing seem impossible on screen.

Mazin also commented on the negative reactions that occurred during the first season. According to the producer, it is sometimes difficult to discern whether given opinions are actually valid or dictated by emotions and attachment to characters. An example was to be the statements of some fans that Ellie is annoying. According to Craig Mazin, such a reaction is a good indication of the show itself, since this is exactly how Joel initially perceived his companion.

Perhaps now even to Ellie fans should get attached after hearing this, since it is not known what fate will befall her in the upcoming season. Unfortunately, it is not known when we can expect the release of the second season of The Last of Us - and that's because of the ongoing strike of screenwriters and actors.
