Miguel O'Hara, or Spider-Man 2099, is one of the most interesting antagonists to be seen in cinema in recent times. This, however, required a lot of work on the part of the creators, and it is the character, voiced by Oscar Isaac, went through the most changes in the process of creating Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.

In an interview with Rolling Stone the film's producers talked about the adventure involved in building the entire story. Christopher Miller nailed down the problem the filmmakers faced in the writing process. Oscar Isaac didn't want his Spider-Man to be a bore, but the screenwriters went overboard and at one point he became "too much of an asshole.":

"We had about a thousand people working on the film for a long time. They were constantly making changes, tweaking. And for a while he [Spider-Man 2099 - ed. note] was too much of an asshole. We tried to portray his motivations and his past in an elegant way. Then we thought we just had to let the audience into his world in the same way we did with Gwen and the others. This enabled him to become a multi-dimensional character."

Phil Lord mentioned a conversation with Oscar Isaac, in which the actor outlined who Spider-Man 2099 should be modeled on. He chose a person who probably everyone has in their surroundings: very conservative, orthodox in views, whose behavior, however, is often associated with a huge psychological trauma from the past. The creators wanted to show the beginning of Miguel O'Hara's trauma so that viewers would keep their fingers crossed for him as well, despite the fact that he is the antagonist.

Looking at the ratings from viewers and critics, one gets the impression that they managed to create a really good character. An uninteresting antagonist would have affected the reception of the entire film, which is now getting great reviews. Miguel O'Hara is an adversary to Gwen and Miles Morales, but at the same time he has his own reasons, and his behavior is influenced by past experiences..
