In Secret Invasion fans saw why Nick Fury in the past was so well-informed and ready for many eventualities. Shape-shifting aliens could appear anywhere, and Marvel's latest show revealed that even the Avengers could be replaced. Such a fate did not escape James Rhodes and it turns out that Tony Stark's best friend was swapped for a Skrull years before the action of the show (vide Comic Book).

On this topic spoke the director of Secret Invasion Ali Selim. The filmmaker presented his theory, when James Rhodes was swapped with a Skrull. At the same time, however, he encourages fans to pay attention to details and create their own theories:

"Many people have asked: 'When did Rhodey...?'. I think that showing him in episode six with mutilated legs and wearing a treatment shirt points at Captain America: Civil War. This doesn't have to be the definitive answer, and it would be cooler if the audience went back to past productions, checked out all the moments with Rhodey from a new perspective. They might notice something and say, 'He could be a Skrull here.' Fans can make up their own minds or wait for the answer, which may come in the Armor Wars."

Recall that in Civil War Rhodey was wounded by Vision, who targeted Falcon. Tony Stark's friend fell from a great height, leaving him paralyzed. In the hospital, however, Rhodes must have already been swapped for a Skrull. For the hero, this means a real shock. He missed many important events, including Stark's death.

This would definitely be one of the most important storylines of Armor Wars. Perhaps in the movie fans will see James Rhodes trying to find himself in completely new reality, to which he woke up as if from a coma. Most of the Avengers he worked with or fought against in Civil War are no longer on Earth.
