Live-action Gargoyles Show From Disney Plus Announced; James Wan at Helm

One of the most interesting animated series of the 1990s will receive a live-action reboot. After almost thirty years since the end of broadcast, Gargoyles will return in a completely new form. Kenneth Branagh is involved in the project, and the show will be available exclusively on Disney+. This should not come as a surprise, given that the famous label was responsible for the original (vide The Hollywood Reporter).

'Stone by day. Warriors by night.' The original Gargoyles animated series was broadcast from 1994 to 1997 and told the story of the eponymous magical beasts, sworn to protect a Scottish castle in the Middle Ages. The stone statues, along with the castle, were moved from their native land to New York, where they were revived after a spell that petrified them for a thousand years is broken. Together they decide to defend the city from various villains. Despite the fact that the story sounds stereotypical, the animation has gained a very large fan base due to its dark themes and surprisingly complex storylines.

Gargoyles stood out from similar productions in practically all aspects - from the main characters, to their subsequent adventures, to the antagonists. The darker atmosphere - despite the fact that it was aimed at younger viewers - was also not something popular among shows of the period.

The idea for a live-action adaptation came from Gary Dauberman and James Wan, who had already collaborated on the horror series Annabelle. Dauberman is to create the script, while Wan will take over as executive producer. The project itself is already in the early stages of work, and it is likely that in the coming months we will learn about the first actors who will join the crew.
