"I Prefer Real Cinema”. Action Movie Master Takes Martin Scorsese's Side in Discussion on Superhero Movies

John Woo is deservedly considered a genius of action cinema. Over the decades he has worked with giants like Tony Leung, Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren. He took his first steps in the cinema world on Hong Kong sets, but it was through his love affair with Hollywood that he found himself in the limelight. It was he who in 2000 replaced Brian De Palma, getting behind the camera of the second part of Mission: Impossible.

As it turned out, Woo keeps his hand on the pulse and constantly observes what interesting things are happening in American cinema. In an interview with The New Yorker he admitted that he was very impressed by the Oscar-nominated Hell of High Water by David Mackenzie. However, he spoke less favorably about superhero cinema.

With this statement, Woo may have given many an MCU fan grit their teeth. The words of Silent Night's director probably pleased Martin Scorsese. Not only did the Hong Kong filmmaker pay tribute to his fellow director, but he also supported him in his crusade against capes on the silver screen.

Scorsese is known for his aversion to superhero cinema. In an infamous interview with GQ the filmmaker admitted that he sees it as a threat to the art of filmmaking and encouraged directors in Hollywood to resist and "save cinema."

Although Woo is much less radical in his words than Scorsese, it seems that the men can high-five each other and complain together about the condition of the tenth muse.
