James Gunn Announced What Marvel Mistake His DCU Won't Make

James Gunn and Peter Safran have far-reaching plans for DC, and the filmmakers unveiled the first part of them in early 2023. They have announced a wide variety of productions, which, however, must be consistent to make the whole story of the emerging universe seem logical. One fan, in a now-deleted post, asked the filmmaker if the right person had been appointed to the task of overseeing the integrity of the entire universe (vide Threads).

Recall that last year it was reported that Marvel actually hired a person responsible for overseeing the entire timeline of its cinematic universe. That's the context for the question addressed to James Gunn. The filmmaker answered in a succinct manner, revealing in the process that inside Marvel there may be a communication problem:

"Me and the rest of the team (Chantal, Galen, Jess and so on)! If there is such a position in Marvel, I don't even know who is in charge. I have never discussed anything with him. That's probably why, in my opinion Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is happening now, and everything else says something about 2030 or so. And I thought I was already crossing the line by showing that his [Star-Lord's -ed. note] grandfather is still alive."

James Gunn's statement is interesting because it reveals that if indeed someone at Marvel is in charge of keeping an eye on the timeline, even some of the MCU's most important creators may not know of its existence. In such a situation, maintaining the consistency of the universe may be difficult, and no one really knows what year the action of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 takes place.

At DC, guarding the integrity of the universe is supposed to be a collective task for all concerned. At first, it will certainly be quite simple due to the relatively small number of productions. The question is what will happen when this universe grows to a much larger size, containing separate stories of side characters.
