Famous Indiana Jones Scene Could've Appeared in Back to the Future Over 20 Years Earlier

It turns out that we were this close to seeing one of the most recognizable scenes from Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in Back to the Future. Why was the idea dropped?

In 2008, after many years of absence of the iconic archaeologist, we saw the premiere of Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Unfortunately, the latest work in the series, for which Steven Spielberg was responsible, did not meet with favorable reviews from the viewers. There were several reasons for the mediocre reception of the movie. One of them was the hardly believable scenes, such as the one in which Indy hides in a refrigerator to survive an atomic bomb blast. Interestingly, we may have seen a confusingly similar theme would have appeared in the finale of Back to the Future from 1985.

The iconic sci-fi comedy movie series is familiar to almost everyone. However, not everyone knows that the story of a teenager traveling through time was originally supposed to look very different. The original version of the script written by Robert Zemeckis, Steven Spielberg and Robert Gale assumed that Marty McFly does not travel through time with the help of a DeLorean but a... refrigerator, in which he must be when a proces of splitting the atom occurs.

For this reason, in the first part of Back to the Future the protagonist goes to a town that is used for nuclear testing. When the moment of detonation of the bomb approaches Marty hides in the refrigerator and thus travels back in time.

"(...) We wrote this complicated sequence. In the original version, the time machine was built into the refrigerator, which was a time chamber. And that's where Marty was supposed to be when the atomic bomb goes off," Gale revealed in 2020 (via Collider).

And although all three were advocates of spectacularly blowing up the town, the plan, due to the high cost of implementation, had to be changed. So the creators came up with an alternative in the form of the well-known DeLorean, a clock tower and a lightning bolt.

As I mentioned at the beginning, the original idea was not lost with the first version of Return to the Past's script. Years later, it was used by Steven Spielberg (without the time travel element, of course) in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

If you wish to recall this scene, Disney has both Kingdom of the Crystal Skull and the other installments in the Indiana Jones series.
