Although the popular HBO show tried to plausibly portray a quasi-medieval world, an armorer claims that the creators of Game of Thrones got one detail wrong. The story, set in a fantasy world where characters fight with melle weapons and bows and even control dragons, is filled with constant battles and, because almost every character carries a sword or other type of weapon, the constant skirmishes are an essential part of the series. Unfortunately, realism was lacking in some aspect and it's not about fencing mistakes, which one can turn a blind eye to.

The reforging of Ned Stark's sword in the fourth season was a symbolic end to the war with the North and the Lannister family's rise to full hegemony in Westeros. One might assume that the creators would have consulted somebody, what the actual forging and forming of steel looks like. The opposite seems to have been the case.

In an interview with Insider an expert on medieval weapons and armor, Toby Capwell, explained that the process depicted in the show would have completely destroyed Ned's sword and the tool could not be transformed into anything else. If the blade had been remade in real life like shown in the show, it would have become incredibly fragile. Instead of providing the heroes with two swords of Valyrian steel, Tywin Lannister would have been left with an object that would have broken at the very first clash.

"This whole idea of melting the blade and then casting it again in a mold, which is what they are doing, could not happen. If you reduce iron or steel to a liquid state, you lose all the desired properties. If you melt and cast the iron in a mold, only cast iron will come out, which becomes really brittle, making it impossible to harden or heat treat it. You know, when you have a lump of iron ore, you heat it to separate the iron from all the silicates and all the rest of the stuff it's mixed with. However, you never melt the iron completely. You don't heat it to the full temperature at which it should melt. (...) Armorers are very careful and never melt anything completely. You can't melt armor and make new armor out of it. (...) It's silly. I like some of the things that Game of Thrones does with armor, but this particular aspect is a disaster".

This is not the only flaw in Game of Thrones, but certainly one that most fans overlooked. As for others that are easier to spot, we can mention the mounting mountains of corpses during the Battle of Winterfell, the strange placement of trebuchets during the battle with the White Walkers (it was safer to place them behind the castle walls) or the strategically incomprehensible suicidal charge of the Dothraki.

TV shows and movies that draw on medieval periods never fully reflect the actual setting. Similar flaws can be found in other such shows. However, one cannot expect complete accuracy in works that are not documentary productions. After all, who would want to watch characters struggle with logistical issues or activities that take too long? In Game of Thrones the correct forging techniques were admittedly not included, but the series itself lost little in the process.
