'I was Frustrated'; Game of Thrones Actor Criticizes Final 2 Seasons

Conleth Hill became famous for his role as Varys in Game of Thrones. Many of us remember how he nonchalantly set aside the eighth season script when he learned of his character's death. Now he is explaining his displeasure over how the screenwriters destroyed the Spider.

Four years have passed since the release of the eighth season of HBO's Game of Thrones. Although George R.R. Martin suggested that the show should have more seasons, the creators decided to speed up the finale of A Song of Ice and Fire, due to which the last two seasons - although good in terms of special effects - seemed to be done on the fly. What compounded such an impression was the poor script, in which Jon Snow (Kit Harington) basically paraphrased one and the same sentence over and over again, and the characters who became famous as the smartest in all of Westeros became somewhat less smart in season 7 and 8.

This included Varys, played by Conleth Hill. In a recent interview conducted by The Times the actor confessed that, in his mind, the former Master of Whisperers, also known as the Spider, was an omniscient figure for most of the show's duration. The final season, which was hastily concluded, gave his character a finale he didn't deserve.

"I thought I had done something wrong. Until the last two seasons, I had no complaints. Toward the end I felt frustrated because Varys was suddenly no longer the omniscient character that he was before. I think the screenwriters wanted to do one thing to end it, and HBO wanted to do another. I think the last season was a bit rushed. I was inconsolable, but I've come to terms with it now."

Recall that Varys suffered death on the orders of Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke), whom he served for longer than she might have thought. In the books, his role extends with numerous flashbacks showing that he was loyal to the Targaryen family throughout his life. The verdict came after the Spider began to be suspected of wanting to get rid of Daenerys and put Jon Snow, the rightful heir to the Iron Throne, on the throne, as strongly suggested by the series' screenwriters.

Perhaps many of us also remember the moment when Conleth Hill, along with other cast members, read the script for season 8, and after a while nonchalantly set aside the text, without finishing the scene with Emilia Clarke. His face betrayed dissatisfaction, but after a while the star smiled meaningfully and did not say a word. You can see the whole thing on YouTube.
