In David Lynch's Dune from 1984 Kyle MacLachlan played as Paul Atreides. The actor was keen to portray his character and emotions naturally. Unfortunately, this was not always successful and during the filming of one scene the actor became very annoyed that he was unable to convey the state his character was in (vide Screen Rant).

The actor mentioned that in the book his character gets into a fight with Jamis, although Paul Atreides himself tried to avoid this clash. In the end, he kills his opponent and only realizes it after a while. This triggered violent emotions and grief in Paul, which Kyle MacLachlan wanted to replicate as well as possible. Unfortunately, he did not succeed.

"Suddenly everything was reduced to this. I thought: 'Okay, so now I kill him, and now I should cry.' I was young, and at that age things like that can totally block you, because you know what's going to happen and you think, 'Jeez, that's pointless.' To be honest, looking back, the whole situation didn't help me at all," he said.

The film's screenwriter Paul M. Sammon also talked about the occurence. The man mentioned that Kyle MacLachlan was annoyed by the whole situation. He was unable to portray the right emotions, which required tremendous sadness and tears. However, nothing happened, and frustration grew, especially when a crew of several hundred people watched the actor.

They even tried to use menthol, which initially had no effect. Eventually, because of this remedy, MacLachlan began to stream tears, but the actor mentioned that this was still not it. He still looked unnatural and the transition from the adrenaline associated with the fight to mourning the death of a comrade was not achieved.

"It wasn't organic. That's not how it should be done," the actor recalled.

In the end, David Lynch decided to cut the said scene despite the fact that it was important. The director's decision was received with great relief by Kyle MacLachlan.
