Christopher Nolan Criticizes Modern Hollywood; It's About Misunderstanding the Essence of Star Wars

Director Christopher Nolan has openly criticized movie studios for their approach to filmmaking. In his opinion, Hollywood has forgotten what the original Star Wars was famous for.

Christopher Nolan is one of today's greatest directors and his love of cinema cannot be denied. He shared his observations on the current state of the movie industry in an interview with The Telegraph.

Nolan criticizes modern Hollywood for its approach to filmmaking. He believes that studios focus only on telling a particular story and forget what cinema is really about. He pointed out that the story is not conveyed solely with the script, but also through sound and visual effects.

"Whether for budgetary reasons or control reasons, studios are now looking at the script as a series of events and saying, 'This is the essence of what a movie is.' This is completely contrary to how cinema developed, starting with the Lumiere brothers' train pulling into the station - contrary to a pure audiovisual experience. But it's a very popular mistake, sometimes also among critics, that only the scale of the story matters," Nolan states.

The director cited A New Hope from 1977, to confirm that studios currently fail to grasp what the phenomenon of certain films is based on. According to the filmmaker, people just don't understand the essence of Star Wars.

It was the effects that started the breakthrough

When the original part of Star Wars entered theaters, no one expected it to make cultural history books. According to Nolan some had forgotten what made the series such a huge success.

"People will tell you that the success of Star Wars had nothing to do with visual effects, and everything depended on a great story. But that's simply not the case. It is indeed a great story, but at the same time an amazing visual and audio experience. We're dealing with a deliberate denial of what movies really are," explained Nolan.

The director's statement came after the acclaimed filmmaker suggested that he was interested in directing a film set in the Star Wars universe. He did not rule out the possibility of taking on this challenge, but for the time being he has not yet tied himself to any project. Christopher Nolan is known for his reluctance to use CGI, and fans are very curious to see how this would translate into his Star Wars film.
