The director of X-Men: First Class explains his approach to the genre and gives advice to others. science fictionMartin Nothing20 October 2023 Source: Kick-Ass; Matthew Vaughn and Jeff Wadlow; Lionsgate Entertainment; 2010i Superhero cinema has been experiencing quite a crisis recently. Virtually every production in recent months belonging to this genre has been largely criticized for lacking special effects. However, superhero movies have not always relied so heavily on CGI. In a recent interview with Screen Rant Matthew Vaughn talks about this. The creator of such productions as Kick-Ass or X-Men: First Class mentioned the biggest mistake of superhero movies. "When you make a superhero movie, you have to work harder in a sense, because your job is to make people believe it. That's why X-Men: First Class was so down-to-earth. We set the movie during the Cuban Missile Crisis so that the characters would have relevant, human problems. And we didn't rely on CGI. I think CGI ruined everything, because you feel like you're watching a video game. You're not connected to the characters. The exceptions are Guardians [of the Galaxy]. I still think Groot and the raccoon are brilliant, so I really care about them. I think James Gunn and Safran have a good chance of success, and I hope Feige will go back to the "less is more" rule, make fewer movies and focus on making them great." It must be said that Matthew Vaughn hit the nail on the head with his commentary on the problems of superhero cinema. Since the release of Avengers: Endgame we can see a serious decline in the quality of Marvel productions. Apparently, the creators have forgotten that it is the quality that is more important than the quantity. Unfortunately, this also applies to the shows belonging to DC, which in recent times have not been a bit rough. One can only hope that James Gunn, together with Peter Safran, will make movies about Batman, Superman and other well-known heroes more polished.
