In 2012, when Disney bought out Lucasfilm, there was immediate news of plans for new films telling the continuing story of the Skywalker family. When work began on a trilogy of sequels, Mark Hamill had some reluctance to return to his legendary role as Luke Skywalker.

The actor was, in fact, quite skeptical about the way his character would be shown in Disney's production. As we all know very well, in The Force Awakens Luke Skywalker appears only for a brief moment, at the very end of the film. Mark Hamill was not very convinced to return in this form.

After the release of Episode VII in a statement to IGN director J.J. Abrams revealed that it was the ending that Mark Hamill disliked the most.

"To be honest, Mark Hamill was a little reluctant at first... He was so nice to do it, but at first he said: 'Will it look silly, or is it a joke that he's standing there?'"

It was this treatment, however, that allowed Luke's storyline to be properly developed in The Last Jedi. Recall that each of the new episodes was to focus on a different character from the famous trio from Lucas' films. In The Force Awakens it was the character of Han Solo, The Rise of Skywalker became a farewell to Princess Leia, and The Last Jedi told us what was happened to Luke.

Such a small role in the first film may have come as quite a surprise to Hamill. After all, Luke Skywalker is a legendary figure on whom the entire franchise is primarily based. Interestingly enough, in the first previews for The Force Awakens Anakin's son was supposed to appear a little earlier. However, deciding to limit Hamill's role to those few seconds allowed The Last Jedi to focus more firmly on the story of this character and the motives behind his decision to hole up on the planet Ahch-To.
