Robert Downey Jr. took on one of the lead roles in the film telling Christopher Nolan's story of the creation of the atomic bomb. In the latest interview with The New York Times Magazine, concerning Oppenheimer, the actor was also asked about his most recognizable role - Iron Man.

Recall that the star began his long-standing adventure with the aforementioned character in 2008, and hung up the superhero's armor in 2019 with the completion of shooting for Avengers: Endgame. Although audiences have come to love Iron Man mainly because of the charismatic actor who brilliantly portrayed Tony Stark, the actor himself at one point was seriously concerned about how the role of the superhero would affect his acting skills. He talked about this during the aforementioned interview.

"The New York Times: For more than a decade you've worked mainly on Marvel films. Did you have any concerns about the effect this might have on your acting? I say this as a fan, but after all, you played the same role for a long time.

Robert Downey Jr: Yes. One hundred percent [concerned - ed. note]. And I knew there was a moment when Chris Nolan said: "Now let's work on other muscles, but let's do it by depriving you of what you're used to."

On whether Robert Downey Jr. managed to go beyond his standard acting technique in creating a performance in Oppenheimer, we will find out as early as July 21. That's when Christopher Nolan's latest work will hit the cinema screens.

Interestingly, the actor would not have gotten the chance to portray Tony Stark. Marvel's management did not want to hire the said star for the movie that wwould decide the fate of the MCU, because he was associated with his problems with the law. The situation from 1996, when Downey Jr. was arrested for possession of cocaine, heroin and weapons, was still remembered.
