This gave the green light for the first Iron Man, but what was still missing was the most important piece, i.e. the actor for the main role. David Maisel revealed that he sided with Robert Downey Jr, who is now unequivocally associated with the superhero. The aforementioned star did not have a good reputation at the time. The 1996 incident, when he was arrested for possession of heroin, cocaine and an unloaded gun, was still remembered. However, Maisel had faith in the actor and it was he whom he wanted to see in the title role: "People on the board thought I was crazy to hire an addict and put the company's future in his hands. I helped them understand how perfect he was for the job. We were all sure he was clean and would stay that way." We can easily understand the board's objections. The failure of the movie would have meant the end of the comic book giant, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe would never have been made. In the end, however, it turned out that Robert Downey Jr. was sensationally successful in the role of Tony Stark. The Iron Man trilogy and the other MCU films can be found on Disney+.
