Anyone who more or less follows movies or TV series has surely noticed that we are witnessing more and more momentum as new installments appear. Example? Die Hard. In the first installment, John McLane must face some terrorists in the Nakatomi Plaza skyscraper, while the latest, fifth installment he attempts to prevent a nuclear war threatening the entire world. This is, of course, one of many franchises that has proven that more is not always better. Interestingly, the same may have been true of the original Star Wars trilogy.

From a book published many years ago, titled The Making of Star Wars: Return of the Jedi, (via SlashFilm) we learned, the director of Return of the Jedi Richard Marquand wanted the final duel between Luke, Vader and the Emperor to be much more spectacular than the one in The Empire Strikes Back . And while we don't know exactly what the creator's vision was, it's not hard to guess that it was more impressive.

In the end, however, we got a restrained duel, to which the Emperor initially did not interfere at all, watching developments from his throne. As a result, Palpatine retained his status as a sinister shadow eminence. It turns out that this minimalism is a credit to George Lucas.

"George said it doesn't have to be bigger, because it basically can't be. George is very blunt. He said: 'It's just two guys hitting each other with sticks. Don't worry about it. It's bigger because of what's going on in their heads. That's what makes it [the fight] bigger.' That was great, because then I saw exactly what he meant, and I realized that I didn't understand the trick until that moment," Marquand revealed.

Lucas was well aware that what was really spectacular was the internal battle between Luke and Vader. During the duel, both opponents experienced a real rollercoaster of emotions. As Marquand explained, the young Jedi experienced three major battles in his mind during this time: from sheer anger to resignation to fury. So there was no need to put on a show.

It is ironic, however, that what Lucas pushed for in the case of Return of the Jedi, was abandoned by him in the case of the prequel trilogy. Especially during the final battle between Anakin and Obi-Wan in Revenge of the Sith the emotions that were simmering in the heads of the opponents were overshadowed by the special effects and almost circus-like stunts of the fighting Jedi.
