BioShock is rightfully considered one of the most significant games of the early 2000s. The 2K Games studio's title has long been regarded as an exemplary demonstration of sophisticated world-building and unconventional storytelling. BioShock has gained a devoted group of followers, and its iconography has become deeply ingrained in modern pop culture. No wonder film studios have shown interest in this brand.

The first attempt to adapt dystopian sci-fi was made by the Universal studio - a studio with great merit in the field of fantasy films. Unfortunately, the ambitious plan backfired. Years later, the potential director of the blockbuster, Gore Verbinski, claimed that the lack of belief from the producers in high-budget genre cinema for adult viewers was the reason for the project's failure (Collider).

You couldn't bring that thing to a point. […] We were now about to start shooting a $200 million R-rated movie and they chickened out. I think, Watchmen had just come out right before that or something. So, there was a little bit of, these movies need to be PG-13. If they cost that much, they need to be PG-13.

A lot has changed for over a decade. After the success of Deadpool, no one is frightened by R-rated blockbusters. Moreover, viewers are practically demanding them. It seems that the BioShock adaptation has finally got a green light.

BioShock movie Who pulls the strings?

In 2022, Netflix confirmed that development of the film adaptation of BioShock had begun. After the success of the TV series Castlevania, The Last of Us, Arcane, and The Cuphead Show!, it's easier to look forward to the future with hope and excitement, whereas not long ago, the news of any game rights being acquired by a big corporation could have been a cause for concern.

The streaming giant hired industry experts to work on BioShock adaptation. Francis Lawrence, the director of films such as Constantine, I Am Legend, and The Hunger Games series, will be behind the camera. The filmmaker is familiar with science fiction and is also capable of telling brutal genre stories, as he proved in Red Sparrow.

Michael Green is responsible for the script. The American has experience working with fantasy for an adult audience. His achievements include, among others: Logan, Blade Runner 2049 and the excellent series Blue Eye Samurai.

In an interview with Collider, Green expressed his fan fascination with the world of Rapture and also revealed his cooperation with Netflix.

Netflix has been amazing about it. They were excited about it before the strike (WGA strike -note ed.), they're excited about it now, post-strike. Yes, I got called, the, 'How's it coming along?' the minute the strike was over, 'You about ready…?' Been meeting regularly with Francis Lawrence and his team to refine a draft to go back in. We're all optimistic. We all love it. It's a great big sprawling nightmare world we wanna see real.

BioShock movie When is the premiere? What is the story going to be about?

The project is still in the early development phase. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strike likely had a significant impact on the production process and pushed back the potential release date. ScreenRant predicts that the movie won't be released before 2026.

Little is known about the potential plot of BioShock, as it can be inferred from Green's statement that the producers have not yet seen the initial draft of the script. Based on Netflix's announcement, it can be assumed that the film will be closer to the first installment of the series, than to BioShock Infinite.

It's difficult to discuss any casting decisions in light of the SAG-AFTRA strike. It's unknown who will play the lead role or exactly which characters from the game will have a chance to appear on the silver screen. Despite the lack of information, it's hard to envision a BioShock adaptation without Andrew Ryan, the capitalist radical who founded Rapture, Frank Fontaine, the nefarious ADAM dealer, the presence of Big Dadies and Little Sisters, and hords of Splicers.

BioShock won't be coming to theaters anytime soon. It's worth being patient and meanwhile recalling the successful game that started it all.
