Amazon's Fallout Show Takes Risks, but They May Pay Off

The fashion for TV adaptations of video games is not waning, and the next show in line is Fallout, following a completely different path, which may turn out to be the right one.

In recent years, we have seen several adaptations of popular video games, most of which have been met with enthusiasm from fans (The Last of Us, Super Mario Bros. The Movie), causing interest in combining games with the movie industry to grow. Thus, we have reached a time where creators began to think that every game could be adapted, and it is worth recalling that there are movies in production such as Borderlands, the third part of the adventures of Sonic or an untitled film from the Minecraft universe.

The trend for making movies based on video games is not as new as it may seem, because in fact this type of productions have already been shot years ago (Max Payne, Resident Evil, Hitman). Nevertheless, now this trend is gaining momentum, going head to head with the wave of remakes and remasters of older movies.

Also looming on the horizon is Fallout, an Amazon production available on Prime Video next year. Here the creators have set their sights on something different - the fact that the show will not faithfully follow the fate of any character from the games, was known almost a year ago. Nevertheless, this information is constantly resurfacing with more news about the project's show. Perhaps the creators are doing this to be transparent with fans and not to disappoint their expectations. At the end of the day, this may work out for the best, and game developer Todd Howard also spoke on the matter, talking to Vanity Fair.

"I did not want to make a new interpretation of an existing story. And that's what a lot of the proposals were, you know: 'It's a movie based on Fallout 3...'. I answered: 'Yes, we've already told the story.' I'm not interested in adapting them. I'm interested in someone who will tell a unique story in the Fallout universe. Think of it as another game. I gave the creators of the show their own playground to play in," he stressed.

We know more and more about the plot. Vanity Fair reports that it will be the story of a certain Lucy, who survived the apocalypse in a vault, a type of shelter familiar to fans of the series. After leaving she will discover a whole new world, and will be accompanied by Maximus, a member of the Brotherhood of Steel, and Ghoul, a mutant gunman and bounty hunter.

The creators assume that creating a completely new, possibly parallel story, is the only way to adapt such a game series as Fallout. Although we experience a main plotline and a clear narrative, the universe is essentially an open world, in which there is room to add another story. Therefore Fallout will be a completely different adaptation of the game than The Last of Us, which features a linearly told story.

At the helm of Amazon's show are Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan, creators of Westworld. The premiere of the first episode will take place on April 12, 2024.
